Q-2:
At MDSP's ENV2MIDI plugin
analyses the incoming audio signal to extract its envelope which is converted
into MIDI continuous controler.(side chaining anyone?)
How do you set this up in eXT, for example to use the envelope of a kick
drum to control a compressor inserted on a bass line track?
A - NicFit
- Here is a preset
...I made the mistake of putting the compressor on the kick and controlling
it with the bass...but you'll get the idea.
Used Classic Compressor (which isn't the most responsive)...probably better
compressor choices for this type of effect.
Basically Env2Midi converts any audio signal to MidiCC data...which inside
eXT you can use to control anything you want. ...in this preset the CC is
linked to ClassicCompressors "Level" parameter.
Q-6:
I'm on the lookout for a bunch of chords I used to have before my HD crashed. Any hints?
A - NicFit
- That would probably be
Shifrin's chord presets.
Q-9: BASIC
Initially, I would like to transfer what I can do in massiva to energyXT, which is:
Load and play midi and audio files.
A - shifrin - Audio & MIDI files can be drag-n-dropped into their respective components or loaded in the conventional way via file menus.
Q-11: TOBYBEAR PLUGINS AND ENERGY XT
Everytime I've tried to load this in a midi channel of the sequencer and selected my Midi Out
(RME HDSP Midi Out 1) in VST2Midi eXT crashes with:
"Standalone has encountered a problem......Send error report etc. etc."...Am I doing something wrong?
A - NicFit
- Where exactly are you loading the plugin? ...all of TobyBears MIDI plugins require the audio
out port to be connected in order to work,...so you will not be able to load them directly as
a MIDIFX insert.
If that doesn't help then make sure the MIDI Device your trying to use is not in use by disabling
it in the XT's setup page.(not all devices are multi-client) ...if you still have problems then
also try Jaltoh's thalamus plugin(Audio out needs to be connected also) or the MIDI out vst that
comes from Arguru.
If all those fail you then it's your device driver capabilities that is likely at fault. In which
case you may also want to try setting up MIDIYoke and use MIDI-OX to mirror the data to your
hardware device output
Q-15:
Can I "redo" my actions?
A -
- not currently (June 2, 2005)
Q-17:
What is a good method to test if my Asio-drivers and EnergyXT work fine together?
A - shifrin
- Here is a real basic way to tell if eXT & ASIO are playing nice with each other...
- Below the Synchronizer/s Tempo is a Click track. Click on the button labeled with "..." and load a WAV file - it really doesn't matter what it is (percussion samples work fine).
- Start the Synchronizer...you should hear the sample play over & over again.
Q-18:
Can I use my computer keyboard for recording into EnergyXT?
A -
- When you say that you want to record via your computer keyboard, do you mean as a replacement
for a MIDI keyboard? If so... you can't do that directly with eXT (only in step record
using shortcut keys), but there are a couple of VST effects (e.g. Trollo) that allow you
to use your computer keyboard in that manner. You could also try an external MIDI utility
that can be used with MIDI Yoke or Hubi's Loopback if the VST option doesn't work for you.
Q-19:
How do I access the 'midi' that comes with the OS or sound-card? Because they are some
cool sounds there. My migration from massiva will then be complete.
A - nicfit
- If you mean the Software Synth built into windows, you will need to enable it in the setup
page(Microsoft GS Wavetable) or whatever. Once you have the correct midi out port enabled
in setup, you can route your midi parts/tracks to the Master outs Midi port and it will play
those system sounds...You can only have one Midiout active at a time, use TobyBears VST2MID
plugin to access more ports.
You can also wire up your Master in Midi port directly to your Master out Midi Port to play
the OS softsynth....but keep in mind there is a slight delay.
Q-26:
OUT OF DATE? - Lost browser using EXT inside Tracktion - My browser button
isn't even working right now. When I hit browser nothing happens.
A - plastique
- you have to check in your energyXT.ini in the browser paragraph if the location of your browser hasn't got messed up somehow (which happened to other users as well).
for comparison, mine has these settings and works like that:
[Browser]
left=868
top=26
width=409
height=1015
file=C:\Audio\Plugins\VstPlugins\energyXT\browser.dat
split=249
A - NicFit
- You'll probably have to keep editing the file until jorgen or jules can do something
about it. I think this bug is specific to Tracktion users....it's never happened to me,
but I saw ModuLR made a post about it resetting everytime he opened a second instance
of XT inside Tracktion.
Q-27:
Now where is that EXT.ini file you're talking about? I only see the GUI, XT.dll, XTE.dll,
and Standalone files.
A - plastique
- it's in the system root directory , i.e. C:\Windows for example in XP.
Q-30:
How can I get multi-outs and -ins on the Vst versions?
A - Mikael Adle
- For example. 4 stereo outputs.
Create an ini file called e.g. xt4out.ini and type:
[VST]
enable=1
outputs=8
Then create a copy of the xt vst dll and rename it xt4out.dll and have it the same
folder as your VSTiīs.
Q-31:
How do I clear out the list of projects in the "open"-dialog?
( Also, why is every project listed twice, once with the .ext extension and one without it? )
A - drlazy
- You can do it through the energyxt.ini file.
Type energyxt.ini in the windows "run" dialog and edit the "[Recent]"...
( About the projects appearing twice, I guess the project_name.ext files are listed there
because you worked on these projects and eXT remembers it (like windows "recent documents")
and the project_name is simply a listing of a folder in your projects directory.)
Q-32:
How can I automate preset and bank changes (of any VSTi) from within EnergyXT?
I've been diggin, but no gold yet.
A - DarkStar
- The easiest gold you'll ever find.
In your MIDI Part Controller view:
- select Preset Change
- Alt-Click to enter the PresetChange events
- F9 to open the Event List
- click a Preset Change event in the Event List to select it,
- drag each Preset Change event bar up/down to set the right number (or click the Up/Down arrows)
- remember: a Preset Change value of 0 is the first patch in your VSTi.
Q-39:
ENVELOPE COMPONENT - Since only the Run position makes the midi-envelope
go about, what is the other 2 for?
A - piranhaXT
- The other two are triggered via cc notes.
Legato will stay triggered & will continue to run the evenlope as long as a note
is still pressed after the initial note(s) is/are played.
Sync will restart the envelope everytime a new note is sent it's way & continue
to run the envelope as long while the note is still played.
You just need to feed it a steady diet of CC notes, that's all!
Q-40:
GENERAL - I don't understand what I can do with EnergyXT. What is all this about?
Is it for sounddesigners only, like Reaktor is, where only the " in the know" make
own ensembles? I must say that still I don't see the reason to use it...
many Midi envelopes... Midi split and more...
In FLstudio this all is possible within the software...People LOVE it... and for what?
For building more send effects to your editor...? For changing Midi control with envelope?
One thing you should all know:
I'm very into Midi stuff, very into controllers and more... but this software doesn't
do anything the you will need...
A - whyterabbit
- For example, EnergyXT is for:
- effects chaining and
- sequencing and
- a sampler is there for you.
Possibilities:
- With EnergyXT, you can take a single track of MIDI, and arpeggiate that feeding it
to another arpeggiator which drives a synth while your first arpeggiator gets turned
into chords which control a different synth and your original MIDI sequence controls
a third synth whilst simultaneously controlling a set of parameters in an effects
chain that all the synths are being sent thru...? and it takes about 30 seconds
to set that up, and the structure can be saved for reuse within any other project?
- People love EnergyXT for its complete flexibility, which is unlike many other hosts.
It does plenty someone might need. And it's not just about MIDI.
Q-42:
GUI Editor (AKA Options window) - Is there a way for eXT to remember the Skins folder?
A - adds2one
- If you are using the latest beta (june 12) or any version after it you should be able
to right-click on the main desktop, select Options, click File, then Folder,
then select the folder that you keep your skins in. Now when ever you click file in the
Options window you will see all your skins listed.
Q-43:
SAMPLER - As long as it tell me exactly what those stupid little buttons are in the gate in the sampler?
A - plastique
- glide controls
Q-44:
GENERAL - Is it possible to have multiple outs in the standalone version of eXT?
I know you can do it for the VST version but am unsure if it is the same for SA.
Has anyone done this? I want to make use of the extra stereo out of my audio card.
A - NAS
- Yes. You just need to activate the extra audio outs in setup
Q-45:
SAMPLER - Nothing happens when I open the Browser and try to drag-and-drop
a sf2 file into the "Sounds" part. Am I doing something wrong?
A - caleb, topaz
- Use the browser F3. Yes, it only works from the Browser which is a little strange to comprehend.
You don't just drag and drop the sf2 file either. You need to expand it to find the
right element to drag-and-drop.
There should be sub-levels called Presets, Instruments and Samples.
If you expand Instruments you should be able to see the individual instrument you are
looking for and drag and drop it into the sampler.
If you just want to use a sample you can expand on the Samples sub-level and then
drag-and-drop the individual sample you want.
Q-48:
Is drag-and-drop of wave / midi clips supported?
A - scuzzphut, NAS, Mikael Adle, DDummer
- Drag-and-drop of midi clips and wav audio *is* supported, through the built-in browser
(press F3) and works fairly well. There are some niggles (midi clips always import by
creating a new track) but otherwise it's very well implemented.
From the explorer it works too.
With eXT as a VSTi in Logic, drag/drop works from eXT to Logic, both audio and midi files.
It works in Tracktion too, but not in in Cubase SL 2.0 and in Sonar right now.
Q-49:
Are there any problems if I want to use EnergyXT as a vst inside Logic?
(the older discontinued PC-version)
A - Mikael Adle
- It works fine. An issue worth noting though is: when you use EnergyXT inside Logic the
eXT-sequencer always starts at 11.1.1.1.
(some further explanation by "Stick-in-the-mud" and Zauni: I think this a Logic problem.
At least Jamstix does the same thing but you can do a 'BarOffset=10' to line it up with
Logic again. I guess EnergyXT doesn't have a feature like that yet. (might be a good idea)
Q-50:
MIDI - Can you drag-and-drop midi parts from energyXT's sequencer into the host sequencer,
and vice versa?
A - DarkStar
- I don't think so, but you can export the MIDi PArt as a MIDi ifle, and then load that
in your host.
Q-53:
Now that EnergyXT has a Master-Mixer, is there any reason to keep other mixers
in my default-file?
A - ik_ik_ik
- Yes, there are plenty of other reasons to use mixer comps when working without, or at least
outside of, the sequencer too. Most of them are related to implementing send effects,
e.g. pre/post fader switching, implementation of group effects, etc.
Q-55:
How do I create multiple setups and recall them using MIDI Program changes?
For example, setup #1 = N.I. B4 on channel 1, M-Tron on channel 2.
Then setup #2 = Korg WAVESTATION on channel 1 using an effect plugin, N.I. FM7 on channel 2 ...
So I could send a MIDI program change #1 when I want the first setup and another program
change #2 when I want the second setup (and being able to save, let's say, 128 setups).
That would be the ultimate function needed in live situation for me. I use many plug-ins
with different settings / routings during a show so I just CAN'T simply build a setup loading
ALL theses plug-ins on different channels.
A - jorgen
- Right-click main window and select File mapper, here you can load setups using program change.
Just add the files and enable the filemapping button.
Q-56:
Can I use energyXT as a VSTi to play soundfonts in Tracktion?
A - ceenda, SWTrex
- Just add an energyXT VSTi to a tracktion channel. Inside eXT, right click to add in a
"Sampler" component, open it up. Using the file browser (F3, or the "Browser" button),
search out your soundfont files. You'll be able to expand them in the browser just like
directories. Drag the "Preset" you want into the Sampler. You're good to go.
Be careful with large soundfonts though. At the moment eXT still saves all the sample data
with it, so you may notice large file sizes. But for drums etc. it's great. Especially with
multi-out. You could also wrap eXT in a Rack and control a whole number of different samples
with different MIDI channels.
Otherwise, look into: rgcaudio's SFZ (freeware)
