Q-1: Why... when I click on the edit button in my audio tracks (in the sequencer), it says "can't edit noname"...?
Even if I put a wave file in the track... But, if I double click on the wave, it opens the editor etc.?

A - Amberience - If you're like me, then you have a cascaded filing system - Mine is D:\Music\
Then I have folders for different stuff:
  D:\Music\samples
  D:\Music\songs
  D:\Music\patches
  Etc...
Now... right click the main are and select file>folder... then set this to your root directory - In my case D:\Music\
Now XT will search through all the cascaded folders for file types it recognises (Songs only I think) and then you can select any of these songs by right clicking and looking at the bottom of the file menu. This also works for Chord settings that you've saved - So now I have all my songs listed as well as the chords kindly donated by Shifrin

Q-3: How do I automate inserts?
When I route the envelope to the track the insert is applied to the midi-data seems not to be routed to the insert...

A - jorgen - right-click the item (VST or audio track) in the sequencer with the insert FX(s), then select 'Send MIDI to inserts'

TOP

Q-4: how do I resize the automation windows in the sequencer? is it possible to zoom in vertically?

A - nors - you must click in the grey zone under the piano roll and drag it

TOP

Q-5: is it possible to save tracks created in the sequencer as .mid files?

A - NicFit - Yes, you can export the MidiParts in the sequencer tracks... open the part, and from the File menu choose Export MIDI File.
- Jorgen says he will include an option to Export all the tracks to a single midi file in a future update.

Q-7: is it an obligation to put all the effects directly as inserts in the sequencer or is there any solution I didn't see to render to wav the 'final' output of the master out ??

A1 - Click on the master out and select live record.
As far as I know you will have to record in real time to capture everything

A2 - Here's how you can do it...

  1. Save your EXT project & start a new project.
  2. Add a sequencer & set the output for one of your MIDI parts to EXT as a VSTi.
  3. Open the VSTi for editing & open your project.
  4. Go to the sequencer in your saved project & set the sequencer's external sync (in the options menu).
  5. In the new project's sequencer, make sure that it is set to the same length as your original project.
  6. Render to wave & you will capture everything inside your original project.

Q-8: Can the new automation track send it's values to an additional midi out of the sequencer comp?

A - - yes it can.
in the sequencer first add your midi out(s).
now right-click on the envelope part and choose "Output->MIDI Out-> Port#"

Q-10: How can I record a vocal or guitar part?

A - -

  1. open the sequencer
  2. right-click your mouse and choose "add"
  3. add "audio"
  4. check that your computer's settings are set right for recording line-in or mic (depending on your soundcard)

Q-22: How can I get the live triggering to work? I don't understand it?

A - plastique - here's a step-by-step:

  1. add sequencer
  2. switch to multi mode
  3. program your arrangements
  4. switch to live mode
  5. click "add" to add a playgroup
  6. right-click the playgroup lane to add arrangements
  7. right-click the arrs for trigger mode or leave it as it is for this quick tutorial
  8. repeat 5-7 as often as needed
  9. prepare for playback:
      - set master to a number of beats (i started with 8 for some small loops)
      - set trigger notes/cc of arrs/tracks
      - set exclusive groups
      - set sync mode (master, beat or off)
  10. playback: hit play (i'll call it "master play" )
  11. once a playgroups is set to play , the included tracks are triggered (either arm the playgroups and trigger the tracks individually or arm the tracks and trigger the playgroups individually)
  12. master play stops the whole thing

Q-25: Does EnergyXT allow timestretching in version June 12, 2005? if so, how?

A - plastique - No, you cannot timestretch a single audio clip.

But you can split a clip into several clips. If you stretch the part then (Shift+drag the right-hand edge of the part) the individual clips will be repositioned proportionately:

  • insert audio sample into audio track
  • dbl-click it to open its part editor
  • there split the clip to a few instances
  • close part editor
  • shift-drag to resize part
  • open part editor again to check if it worked

Q-29: Why are the sequencer-metronome and the gobal-metronome not in sync? Is there any situation where you would want them to be different?
A - NicFit - yes...this was requested.
You can choose in the "Master" section of the sequencer's mixer to switch between "Int" or "Ext"...if you choose "Ext" you will need to adjust the tempo in the Main window under the synchronizer for it to take affect. So Vsti's inserted into the sequencer sync to the sequencer's metronome. They'd only sync to the master metronome if you'd select "Ext" mode.

*Q-34: - What is the function of the 2 buttons just left of the 3 zoom buttons?

A - plastique & DarkStar & Jens - The arrow-button that changes direction is for absolute / relative snapping. (shortcut "p" to toggle on/off)
- The next button to the right of it is for Note Preview. When it is enabled you can click on any note in the editor and it gets played. The same button is also in the big midi-editor so that you can enable/disable the note-preview from both: the sequencer main-view and the editor.

TOP

Q-35: Can you tell me what absolute and relative snapping are? I have no idea.</snap>
A - nax - Relative is: when the note you drag snaps on every snap unit of distance away from its current position. An example: if your snap setting is 4 (for quarter notes) then if you drag a note it will snap at multiple distances of quarter notes away from its current position.
- Absolute is: when the note you drag snaps on every snap unit of the song time line. Another example: if your snap setting is 4 then when you drag a note it will snap on quarter note borders of the time line.

Q-37: How do I use the envelope-automation for audio tracks?
The background is that I quiet my vocal tracks down and make them louder again on some parts, just like a Cubase user would do with the "Write" and "Read" buttons.
I know this isn't possible like that in EnergyXT, but it should be possible with the envelopes, shouldn't it? Can't find any useful documentation regarding this topic...

A - jorgen - Using envelope clips:

  1. add envelope track
  2. right-click track panel and select output, and select the the audio track you want to automate
  3. double-click somewhere in the envelope track to add a envelope clip
  4. double-click track panel (or press e) to enter in-track edit mode
  5. alt-click or double click inside the clip to add points/curves
  6. press shift+return (will play the envelope clip in loop)
  7. ctrl-click or middle-click the volume fader (midi learn)
This is one way of doing it.
Note that you can save/load envelope clips and time-stretch them by dragging the end of the part with shift pressed.

(additional A from NicFit) I'll add a step between 5 and 6...

&nbsp 5.5) Hit "S" key to solo the envelope track.
That might help later on when your automating something which already has multiple Envelopes routed to it.

Q-38: How do I use the dynamic envelope-automation for audio tracks?
So there's only this "static way" of automation?
I thought, after I middle click the volume knob, I'm able to move the volume knob to the right and left (to make the track louder or more quiet) and the envelope would write that curve down into itself - just like i would do with "Read" and "Write" in Cubase.
So I always have to define the volume-curve in advance?
No "on the fly volume curve" generation possible?

A - Soma - Actually there is no way to record any GUI movements. Sorry. I'm waiting for this too.
What you can do though is use a Vst such as NicFit's nF_ControlFront (running into the sequencer) and assign a slider in his Vst to output the same CC you assigned to the level of your audio track. After this you can record a midi track that has his output to audio. While recording you can move the faders on NicFit's "nF_ControlFront" and the movements will be recorded to the midi track and control the audio level.

Q-41: LIVE MODE - What can I do with the "key"-field next to the "Note"field (can be set from "0" to "Z")?

A - caleb - This is so that you can use keys on your computer keyboard as triggers.
Maybe you can have a look at the BETA manual entry for "Live Arrangements". This might help you.

TOP

Q-47: NO SOUND - I can't get any sound of my sequencer. What to do?

A - Jens, Jorgen - Your audio-setup might be wrong. Go to --> Setup and look if the right audio-devices and midi-devices are on.
When audio is NOT running, there will be a cross in the cpu led in upper left corner...

Q-51: RECORDING - Can energyXT record events in it's sequencer from a VST plugin that generates MIDI information (like Jamstix)?

A - DarkStar - Yes, you might want to use two sequencers, the first to load and play JamStix and the second to record the MIDI output.

TOP

Q-52: RECORDING - Can I only record from an external MIDI source, or can I also record MIDI from another plugin?

A - davy - Just connect the midi out of the plugin to the input of your sequencer. EnergyXT is a modular system. You might think of it as real instruments/effects/... So if you want the midi your midi keyboard produces (or your synth), you just put a cable between the keyboard/synth and your sequencer. Then hit the record button and you're ready to go. All the details can be found in DarkStar's Beginner's Recording Guide.

TOP

Q-54: Can I render audio in 24 bit or higher?

A - Jens, Klemperer - The render dialog can be found in the sequencer
--->file --->render to wav --->there you can choose 16, 24 or 32 bit and 44100 or 96000 what you want.
Even better: It also pops up when you press crtl+r !
